Email Marketing Campaigns: How to Plan, Build and Measure One That Pays for Itself
Plan, build and measure email marketing campaigns that convert, with UAE benchmarks, a comparison chart, consent rules and the mistakes to avoid.
Quick Answer
An email marketing campaign is a planned series of emails sent to a defined list to achieve one goal, such as launching a product, recovering abandoned carts or booking consultations. A campaign that pays for itself has five parts: a clean opted in list, one clear goal, a sequence of two to five emails, a measurable call to action and a review of revenue against cost. In the UAE you also need documented consent under the PDPL. The benchmark to beat is a 25 to 35 percent open rate and a 2 to 4 percent click rate, and most campaigns that miss this fail on list quality, not on design.
What counts as a campaign and what does not
A newsletter sent every Tuesday because it is Tuesday is not a campaign. It is a habit. Email marketing campaigns have a start, an end and a single measurable goal. A product launch sequence, a Ramadan offer, a re engagement push to dormant customers, a webinar invitation, an abandoned cart recovery. Each has a number attached to it that you can call a win or a loss. The always on side of email, list growth, segmentation and automation, is a programme question, and it sits inside the wider services we run for clients rather than inside any single campaign.
The distinction matters because campaigns are where you learn. One campaign with a clear goal teaches you more about your audience than a year of newsletters. The brands we work with through our digital and development service typically run two to four campaigns a month alongside their automated flows, and they review each one in a 30 minute meeting the week after it ends.
The six campaign types worth running
| Campaign type | Goal | Emails in sequence | Typical conversion (UAE accounts) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Product or service launch | First sales or bookings | 3 to 5 | 1 to 3 percent of list |
| Seasonal offer (Ramadan, DSF, National Day) | Revenue in a window | 2 to 4 | 2 to 6 percent |
| Abandoned cart or quote | Recover lost revenue | 2 to 3 | 8 to 15 percent of abandoners |
| Re engagement | Wake dormant contacts | 2 to 3 | 3 to 8 percent reactivated |
| Event or webinar | Registrations | 3 to 4 | 5 to 12 percent register |
| Case study or proof | Move leads toward a call | 1 to 2 | 1 to 2 percent book a call |
Seasonal campaigns in the UAE need more lead time than most teams allow. Ramadan creative should be approved three weeks before the month starts, and DSF competes with every retailer in the country. The dates and lead times for the full year are in our UAE marketing calendar for 2027.
Step 1: Fix the list before you write anything
The single biggest predictor of a campaign result is who is on the list. A list of 2,000 people who asked to hear from you beats a purchased list of 50,000 every time, and the purchased list will also get your domain blacklisted. Under the UAE Personal Data Protection Law, you need clear, recorded consent before you send marketing email. Remove anyone who has not opened in 12 months before a big campaign, or send them a separate re engagement sequence first.
Step 2: One goal, one call to action
Every email in the campaign points to the same action. Book a call. Use the code. Register. If the email has three buttons, it has no goal. Write the call to action first, then write the email backwards from it.
Step 3: Build the sequence
- Email 1, the announcement: what it is, who it is for, the one reason to care. Short.
- Email 2, the proof: a case study, a number, a customer quote. Sent 2 to 3 days later.
- Email 3, the objection: answer the main reason people have not acted yet. Price, time, trust.
- Email 4, the deadline: last chance, with the real deadline, not a fake one.
- Optional email 5: sent only to people who clicked but did not convert.

Step 4: Subject lines and sending times that work here
Subject lines under 45 characters perform best on mobile, which is where over 70 percent of UAE email is opened. Avoid all caps and avoid the word free in the subject. For B2B, Tuesday to Thursday between 8 and 10 am Gulf time gets the best open rates in our accounts. For consumer brands, 7 to 9 pm works, and Friday morning is weak. Test, do not assume.
What good looks like: benchmarks by campaign type

Abandoned cart emails open and click far higher because the reader already showed intent. Treat these as ranges, not promises.
Step 5: Measure revenue, not opens
Opens are inflated by Apple Mail Privacy Protection, which loads images whether the reader opened or not. Clicks are better. Revenue or booked calls are the only number that matters. Set up tracking so each email link carries a campaign tag and your CRM records which contacts converted. If your CRM and email tool do not talk to each other, that integration is a small job for our technology team and it changes what you can see.
Five mistakes that quietly kill campaigns
- Sending from a no reply address. People reply to emails. Let them.
- Designing a beautiful image only email that shows as a blank box in Outlook.
- Writing in English only to a list that is 40 percent Arabic speaking.
- Using a fake countdown that resets. Readers notice and stop trusting you.
- Never cleaning the list, so deliverability drops every quarter and you blame the tool.
A realistic example
A Dubai clinic with 6,500 opted in patients ran a four email campaign for a new service. Open rate 29 percent, click rate 3.1 percent, 41 bookings at an average value of AED 900. Revenue AED 36,900 against a campaign cost of about AED 2,500 in time and tools. That is a normal result, not a great one, and it is still a 14 to 1 return. The clinic had tried a one email blast the year before and got nine bookings. The difference was the sequence, not the design.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many emails should a campaign have?
Three to five. One email is a blast and rarely works. More than five annoys people unless they are actively engaging.
Can I email people who gave me a business card?
In the UAE, a business card is not documented consent under the PDPL. Send one email asking for permission, then only continue with those who opt in.
What is a good open rate in the UAE?
25 to 35 percent for a clean list. Below 20 percent usually means list quality or deliverability problems.
Should emails be in Arabic and English?
If a meaningful share of your list is Arabic speaking, yes. Send a bilingual email or segment by language, never a machine translated version.
Which tool is best for email campaigns?
Any mainstream tool works. The tool is rarely the problem. List quality, goal clarity and follow up are.
